Shopping for a new mattress that fits your preference and needs has become extremely simple in today’s world of online shopping and many online resources that can be valuable in helping you pick the right mattress. There are various mattresses on the market nowadays that use different materials and innovative technologies that ensure an individual gets the quality sleep he needs to be productive and energetic throughout the day. One can find a good quality mattress in the market that fits any budget and price range.

The first and most essential aspect of a mattress should be the level of comfort it provides. You can buy a mattress that is marketed as a high quality yet very expensive but if it doesn’t provide the comfort and support you require, it is not the right one for you. The wrong mattress for you can cause more than restlessness and fatigue. It can lead to lower back pain and neck pain that can turn chronic in the long run.

So what makes a good mattress? It depends on the kind of sleeper you are. If you tend to move a lot during sleeping, your mattress should adhere to the natural curve of your body and align with it to provide adequate support and cushioning to the various parts of your body, especially the neck and the lower back. It should get rid of all the tension and pressure present in our body as we sleep so we can wake up feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Mattresses must be viewed as an investment. A good quality mattress will last you anywhere from 8 to 10 years if used properly. So it is worthwhile to look for high quality, durable mattress that addresses your specific needs. Here are the three main factors to look for when purchasing a mattress:

Size:

Mattresses are commercially available in several different sizes, depending on the person they are made for. For adults, there are usually six sizes- Twin, XL Twin, Full Size, Queen Size, King Size and California King Size.

Twin Mattresses and Queen Size Mattresses are ideal for a single individual. For couples, one can choose the King Size or The California King Size that can also accommodate children as well.

Mattresses can be custom made on order as well. One must take in consideration one’s height when choosing the size of their mattress. It is advisable to customize a mattress according to your height.

Firmness:

Firmness in a mattress refers to how soft or stiff a mattress is. Mattresses today come in various levels of firmness. There is not one standard firmness level that is good for everyone. What is a soft and plush mattress for one person can be stiff and hard for another person? It all comes down to your preference and other factors, such your weight,  your body type, how often do you change positions during your sleep, if you have any lower back issues and so on.

The firmness of a mattress can be customized according to the customer’s requirements. When browsing through mattresses, you will notice that there are three categories of firmness: small, medium and large firm. There are again sub-categories in these such as medium-soft, medium-firm, medium-large firm, soft firm etc. In a general sense, when we refer to how comfortable a mattress is, we are referring to its firmness.

It is worthwhile to always test the mattress of your choice before buying it. If you are buying it from the store, take several minutes to lay in it and get comfortable to figure out how soft or firm it is. If the store offers a trial period, take advantage of it and try the mattress out before buying it.

Material

The most common materials used in the mattress industry for making mattresses are:

  • Innersprings- Spring or coil mattresses, also called innerspring, are the most common and widely popular mattresses used. These types of mattresses have been in use since the 1900s and have been around for a long time due to their longevity and the bounce they offer that is liked by many customers. These are also the most affordable mattresses on the market, especially favoured by students.
  • Memory foam- One of the most expensive mattresses on the market, the foam in these mattresses absorbs your body heat to provide you with a warm sleep at night. The foam is especially stretchy, aligning to your body to provide maximum support. Memory foam mattresses are very durable and are often recommended for health concerns such as back and neck pain.
  • Latex- Latex mattresses are made from organic latex rubber and have a durability of around 20 years. Latex is considered a better substitute for memory foam as it is less firm and provides a cooler sleep. Latex is also anti-allergic, so it is considered safe for children as well.
  • Hybrid mattresses- These are mattresses that are a blend of latex with any more material such as foam and springs or coils, for example, Aireloom Mattresses that are made from a combination of latex and foam on top with springs in the bottom. Hybrid mattresses combine the good qualities of each material to give customers a mattress of superior quality and longevity.
