What’s In Your Child’s Breakfast Bowl?…..a Twinkie?

Last couple of years breakfast cereal was almost daily breakfast choice in my house….given the age of my boys….9 and 14….it was quick….convenient…..and big time saver since they could do it themselves.

I always had a variety of kids breakfast cereals….whatever was on sale I bought it….

My older son eats healthier grown up cereal due to his diabetes, but once in awhile he was known to indulge in his brother’s kids cereals.

I noticed that my kids were starting to eat cereal as a convenient snack between their meals when I wasn’t home…..

…that led me to a decision I made few weeks ago….NO MORE KIDS BREAKFAST CEREAL….

Last three weeks I’ve been getting up earlier to make sure my boys have a healthy breakfast prepared or approved by me. They still have breakfast cereal once or twice a week, but I make sure the only cereal in my house passes my sugar and fiber inspection.

It’s been only few weeks and the difference in my kids is amazing….relaxed…..calm and organized mornings.

…..where am I going with this?

Yesterday morning I came across an article on called THE 10 WORST KIDS BREAKFAST CEREALS.

Did you know that some kids breakfast cereal contain more sugar then a Twinkie? As matter of fact if you give your child a Twinkie for breakfast you will be saving them some sugar intake….

….isn’t that sickening?

The Environmental Working Group did a new study….study of 84 popular kids breakfast cereals…..

….the result….three-fourth of them failed to meet the federal government’s proposed guidelines on what makes food nutritious enough to be marketed to kids.

Some cereal had more sugar in 1 cup serving then 3 Chips Ahoy cookies…..

….56 out of 84 kids breakfast cereals contained more sugar then the maximum recommended intake.

I was floored…..I knew that not all kids breakfast cereal is the best choice, but I had no idea that majority of kids cereal should not be served to our kids…..PERIOD.

  2. Post Golden Crisp: 51.9% sugar
  3. Kellogg’s Froot Loops Marshmallow: 48.3% sugar
  4. Quaker Oats Cap’n Crunch’s OOPS! All Berries: 46.9% sugar
  5. Quaker Oats Cap’n Crunch Original: 44.4% sugar
  6. Quaker Oats Oh!s: 44.4% sugar
  7. Kellogg’s Smorz: 43.3% sugar
  8. Kellogg’s Apple Jacks: 42.9% sugar
  9. Quaker Oats Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries: 42.3% sugar
  10. Kellogg’s Froot Loops Original: 41.4% sugar

Did your kids breakfast cereal made the list?

Luckily, only two of my kids cereals made the WORST KIDS CEREAL list…..and the rest of the breakfast cereal my boys enjoy actually made the cut as kid-friendly cereals.

Are you surprised that with all of these kids breakfast cereals on the market….and constant TV ads making them sound good and wholesome there is an epidemic in Type 2 diabetes in children in North America? I am not…..and I am doing something about it in my house.

So, mom and dads…..grandmas and grandpas….aunts and uncles….caregivers…..

….it’s time to re-think what we are feeding our children for breakfast…..and snacks.
